The Information Management department (IM) of the European Patent Office (EPO) has 800 staff who work in IT and information processing with a professional and pro-active focus on supporting the different business processes of the EPO. Its services relate primarily to a large patent collection of 60 million documents, accessed using extremely comprehensive search engines and document retrieval systems. The technical environment of the EPO is characterised by an extensive network (LAN-WAN-internet), 270 TB data storage capacity, a three-tier application architecture and 10 000 user workstations.
The Directorate Research & Architecture is responsible for the architecture of the EPO's automation systems, the aim being to align IT with business needs, improve system interoperability and integration, deliver IT flexibly and cost-effectively to users, improve security and reduce risk. It has a total of 12 staff, some based in Munich and some in The Hague. The new Enterprise Architect will support the Architecture unit (8 staff) in achieving its goals, in close co-operation with other IM directorates and a number of Application Management units.
Poste
Main duties
• Helping to define a strategic roadmap for all components of non-patent-related Enterprise Architecture (Office-wide)
• Identifying and communicating new ideas which will help the EPO improve its business and IT performance
• Developing target and transition application and infrastructure architectures in line with overall business and IT strategies
• Developing and maintaining methodologies to support architecture governance
• Ensuring compliance with strategic principles, policies, standards and guidelines throughout the architecture lifecycle process
• Working with outsourcing partners to identify architecture issues, and defining and driving initiatives to address them
• Analysing market developments and emerging technologies to determine their applicability to the EPO's environment
• Enabling the EPO to leverage its IT investment to extend and improve capability, operations and customer service.
Profil
The ideal candidate will have
• a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the IT industry and trends
• familiarity with industry standard software solutions such as SAP and SAS
• proven experience of using standard Enterprise Architecture management frameworks
• experience in IT architecture – strategic, process, and practical implementation
• good understanding of processes, aligning business and IT capability, governance and change management (ITIL)
• at least 5 years' experience in enterprise systems development and implementation, including modelling, building block design, applications and role design, systems integration
• familiarity with Enterprise Architecture management tools
• ability to think, influence and perform at tactical and strategic levels
• excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills at all levels
• ability to write architecture documents well in English.
Minimum qualifications
Diploma of completed studies at university level or - in exceptional cases - equivalent professional experience. Excellent knowledge of one official language and ability to understand the other two.
